Homemade Barbecue Sauce

I love barbecue sauce.  Really love it.  While everyone reaches for the bottle of ketchup for their fries and chicken tenders, I ask for the barbecue sauce.  But, it can’t be just any barbecue sauce.  I’m pretty picky.  There are so many different kinds of bbq sauces: thick and spicy, smokey, tomato-y, and sweet.

This particular barbecue sauce is thick and not overly spicy.  It’s not overly vinegary, either, because I can’t stand dipping fries into barbecue sauce and tasting vinegar in my mouth for the next few hours (eww!).  It’s got some brown sugar in it to give it just the right amount of sweetness.

You don’t need to rush to the store to buy special ingredients for this, either.  A few basic ingredients are all you need.  And an hour to simmer this saucy goodness.  So, if thick, perfectly spicy and sweet homemade barbecue sauce is your thing, welcome to the club, and get cookin’!  Brush the sauce on some chicken, dip some fries in it, smother roasted potatoes with it, or make baked beans with it.  Spread the barbecue sauce love…

This is the first of my classic summer recipes series.  Each week, I’ll be bringing you recipes of those summer dishes you just have to have every year. So, what are your favorite summer recipes?

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

Makes about 5 cups

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1-1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1-1/4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Fresh ground pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder (increase to 1/2 teaspoon for a spicier version)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions:

  • In a medium-sized pot over medium heat, mix all of the ingredients until combined.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low, then simmer for 45-60 minutes (the longer you simmer, the thicker the sauce will be), stirring occasionally until the sauce has reduced and thickened.
  • Let cool slightly before serving, and enjoy!
